Why Louisiana’s Fishermen did not move their boats to Pensacola, Fl.?

My GPS tells me that Pensacola, Fl is only 5 hours away some 304.7 miles leaving from Franklin,La. Or how about Mobile,Al. which is 4 hour and 247.8 miles away. My point is boat owners that are commercial fishermen may lose money because of fuel prices for that run to Al. or Fl. but, they would still have a boat in which to keep going on. Now, they have nothing, their boats are torn up. So lets say “I don’t have fuel money for the trip out and back”. And I say than you are not a good boat owner anyways. What do you say?

Well, what I say is: The storm track for Gustav included possible landfall in the Mobile and Pensacola area !! So, do you LEAVE your known anchorage / dock and make a trip to an area that is JUST as likely to be hit ??

ALSO, your GPS gave you the correct DISTANCE… but since a shrimper is making 15-20 knots at BEST… so the actually trip would be 10 hours !!

Shrimpers ALSO WANT to be on the scene right after the hurricane passes because the storm churns up the shore and provides the BEST shrimping of the season !!

I AGREE that some of those shrimpers need to learn to put out better ANCHORS during these storms.
